Removing and Reducing the Concentration of Fluoride from Tap Water
As the intake of fluoride give us more harm than good, we should try our best to stay away from it. As many household has fluoridated tap water running through their community water system, removing fluoride from tap water is an effective measure to reduce the exposure of fluoride.
The particle of fluoride is much smaller than copper, salts or other contaminants; it could not be boiled off. So removing fluoride is at the same time more difficult and more costy than removing other chemicals or bacteria (that is why they have to legalize fluoride in water — or manufacturers would be spending millions on removing fluoride!).
Recommended Water Filters to Filter Fluoridated Water
If you are only targetting for removing fluoride in tap water but no other chemicals, distillation filtration is the best option. It is cost effective and the installation is easy to follow. However, distillated water does not mean that it is suitable for drinking, post treatment might be necessary.
Water Activated Alumina Defluoridation Filter
This is a type of home water filter system targeting for fluoridated tap water. Depending on the amount of alumina in the filter, the defluoridation filter could reduce the concentration of fluoridated water for as much as 85% to 90%. This filters are usually adopt in areas where fluorosis is widely occuring. But the filters themselves are quite expensive and have to be frequently replaced.
Reverse Osmosis Water Filter System
Some people do not believe that reverse osmosis (RO) can remove fluoride, because fluoride are so small and RO filters contaminants mainly by carbon filter. But in fact, they do. We cannot guarantee that all reverse osmosis water filter on the market could remove fluoride because different RO models have different quality, but a standard 5-stage reverse osmosis water filter can remove more than 97% of fluoride from fluoridated water. Other than fluoride, if you have other chemicals in your tap water, reverse osmosis is the best choice because it would produce clean drinking water upon filtration, so that you do not need to worry about other contaminants. Surely you may be already looking for the ultimate reverse osmosis water filter system. But again, since the quality of RO filter varies, make sure you are getting what you want.
Other than the ways stated above, there is little home treatment that can reduce fluoride. Light filters like water pitchers and water dispensers (like Brita, Pur), boiling water, freezing water or even some bottled water, do not remove fluoride.
Be sure to look for third party verification standards such as NSF when buying any aforementioned filters. Be skeptical and do not trust all of the claimed advertisment solgans.
